Now the longest rail-trail east of the Mississippi River, the 150-mile Great Allegheny Passage spans two states in its course along majestic rivers and across mountain passes. Running from Pittsburgh, Pa., to Cumberland, Md., the Great Allegheny Passage trail traces the paths of railroads that helped build America. The Great Allegheny Passage begins in the industrial suburb of McKeesport and continues some 70 miles to the Eastern Continental Divide. At this point, it follows the route of the old Western Maryland Railroad. You will cross the continental divide just before reaching the Maryland state line. From this elevation, more than 3,000 feet, it’s all downhill to Cumberland. You will pass through the ½ mile long Big Savage tunnel just beyond the divide. The trail continues for 22 more miles to ends in Cumberland. At this point, the trail connects to the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal National Historic Park towpath, which takes you another 184 miles to Washington, D.C., without ever leaving a trail.
